Describe being a President of a Chapter in times of COVID.
“ It is an ongoing challenge in which we (as a chapter) try to prepare for everything we can. The uncertainty aspect takes a toll as well. However, it is in times such as these that core values of our fraternity must be the main focus. Virtue, through doing our very best to keep ourselves and fellow members safe while also holding each other to the highest of standards. Diligence, in keeping focused on academics and keeping priorities straight. Brotherly love, in maintaining strong relationships within the chapter and fellow UT community whether it be virtual or in-person.”
What is the number one priority now as President?
“Brother safety and well-being is always a priority one. Even before COVID-19, as a chapter we strive to create a culture in which mental and physical health are being well developed. SigEp is all about supporting fellow brothers through ups and downs. Furthermore, a top priority is maintaining a state of normalcy for members. We try to do that by still conducting our weekly meetings and committee meetings but we just do them virtually. Although not the exact same, the act of being with your brothers, even virtually, still has the ability to enhance lifelong relationships and experiences.”
What gave you the desire to run for a position such as Chapter President?
“From day one of joining SigEp I knew I was joining something special. I have never wanted to find the best way to give back to something until SigEp. SigEp has given me opportunities to grow in ways I never knew was possible. There is an unsaid standard I think that all members hold each other to and I felt President was the best way to uphold that standard whole most importantly giving back to the Chapter that has given me so much. Also, there were many important people such as Jordan Jones (Ohio Iota President 19/20) and Jacob Smith (Ohio Iota President 18/19) that were such great role models for me in running for the position. Ultimately my love for the Chapter and our brothers gave me the ultimate motivation.”
What is your advice and expectations for SigEp going forward?
“Never take your foot off the gas…If you think you are ahead, you are not, keep moving forward…My main advice to the new and young members would be to continue in creating a culture in which we all support each other in the best way possible. For me, especially in times of COVID, my fellow executive board members and everyone in the chapter has kept me motivated to do my duties to the best of my ability. The continued support from all is what will help Ohio Iota and all of the University of Toledo community get through these times of COVID together and as one.”
Anything else to add?
“I would just like to say I hope for the good health and well-being of the entire Greek and UT community. I know these times are tough, but I also know that we are capable of coming back from this as strong as ever.”
